About the MEWA Association of America

Our Vision: The MEWA Association of America promotes self-insured MEWAs as a practical and long-term solution to employer-sponsored employee health benefit coverage for small- to mid-sized employers.

The primary purpose of the MEWA Association of America (MAA) shall be advocacy and support of self-insured MEWAs, both locally and nationally.

MEWA Association of America will:

  • Aid in the establishment of best practices for formation and development of MEWAs.
  • Assist in the development of a National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Model Act for the regulatory approval and monitoring of MEWAs. (This may take the form of revisions to ERISA, to enable federal regulation of MEWAs.)
  • Promote standardization of regulatory infrastructures through collaboration with federal and state regulators to provide sustainable options for healthcare coverage in the marketplace.
  • Provide education and compliance resources to member MEWAs, in coordination with the Department of Labor and State Regulatory bodies.
